So, two D.C. Council members have introduced a bill aimed at making healthy foods more accessible to “under-served areas” -interesting term- by attracting chain grocery stores to those areas. The measure also would offer incentives for existing stores to sell fruits and vegetables.
The notion of such an endeavor is a noble one. Let’s hope the council members also consider adding programs that will change some D.C. residents’ behavior to get them to actually chose to buy the healthy foods. Making the foods available is one thing, getting people to participate in the process is another. A bit of behavior modification, and healthy choice education are needed, as well
Hats off to D.C. city leaders for taking the City’s health problem serious.
