Earlier this month, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) released it much anticipated American Fitness Index. The report uses a series of data to determine the fittest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in the United States. Data used to create the report typically includes the amount of community resources allocated towards the promotion of health and fitness. With that said, here’s a speedy synopsis of the report’s findings:
When it comes to health and fitness, it appears that there is one state that’s making serious headway. Although it did not take the top honor, California managed to capture three of the index’s top 10 spots. The statistical areas that were noted in those three listings were:
- Sacramento, Arden, Arcade, Roseville
- San Francisco, Oakland, Fremont
- San Jose, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara
The San Francisco area took the fourth spot while Sacramento came in seventh. The San Jose area, on the other hand, landed in tenth place. All three MSAs are known to have strong cycling and walking communities.
Not surprisingly, the number one health and fitness spot this year was in Minnesota. The champ is the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington area. Its 3,318,400+ residents are not strangers to the top health and fitness ranking. They have managed to earn the title twice before.
So what does Minnesota have over its not so fit cohorts? For starters it has a phenomenal amount of recreational opportunities available per capita. Those opportunities include tennis courts, baseball diamonds, parks and golf courses. It also has an abundance of farmer’s markets where residents may access fresh, sustainable foods. All of those factors and more contribute to the area having some of lowest, disease related mortality rates around.
We here at Nexercise applaud the efforts of everyone that managed to make this year’s list. We’d also like to remind those communities looking to improve their health and fitness rankings that our weight loss app can help. It is designed to aid people in the pursuit of their personal health and fitness goals. For more information on how the Nexercise app can help, contact us online.
